Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker may have sparked controversy with his commencement speech at Benedictine College recently — but he didn’t jeopardize the Chiefs’ victory trip to the White House.

“We invite the entire team and we do that always,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said when asked whether the Chiefs are still welcome to visit later this year.

Asked whether the White House would prevent Butker, specifically, from attending, Jean-Pierre said that would be up to the team.

Butker took aim at President Joe Biden in the opening of his speech to the Catholic college, denouncing the President’s support for abortion rights and questioned Biden’s faith.

“Our own nation is led by a man who publicly and proudly proclaims his Catholic faith but at the same time is delusional enough to make the sign of the cross at a pro-abortion rally,” Butker said. “He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies, that I am sure to many people it appears that you can be both Catholic and pro-choice.”

Butker also criticized LGBTQ Pride Month — which takes place every June — and suggested that women should stay at home rather than pursue careers.

Biden frequently talks about his Catholicism and regularly attends mass. He has said he struggled over abortion rights — he voted against abortion rights bills while serving in the Senate — but has frequently called on Congress to codify Roe v. Wade.

Asked about Butker’s speech on Thursday, Jean-Pierre said she hadn’t listened to it, but reiterated the White House’s support for abortion rights and LGBTQ rights.

“Look, the President is not going to back away from supporting women and reproductive rights, reproductive healthcare,” Jean-Pierre said Thursday. “It is important to do that. It is important to fight for all of our freedoms, and that’s what you’re seeing the President do. He’s not going to back away from that.”

Butker made the trip to the White House with the team in 2022 and wore a tie that has an anti-abortion message written in Latin. He wasn’t among a group that met directly with the president. That group included Andy Reid, Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes.

After the ceremony, Kelce said he was awed by the visit.

“Hearing President Biden talk about the pieces and the things that mean a lot to him in the Oval Office over in the West Wing, it was pretty eye opening,” Kelce said at the time. “And you can tell he’s in it for the right reasons.”
