Busted pipe forces evacuation at Northern California senior housing complex

(FOX40.COM) — An apartment complex for seniors was forced to evacuate on Saturday night after fire crews discovered a busted sprinkler supply pipe in the ceiling.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. at the Cottonwood Senior Apartments in Placerville, according to the El Dorado County Fire Protection District.

Fire crews were called to the apartment complex after a commercial alarm was set off. When they arrived, crews found “excessive waterflow” on the second floor.

“The burst affected about 20 units on both the second floor and 20 units on the ground floor,” El Dorado fire officials said.

The agency added that the Placerville Police Department was asked to assist in evacuating all residents from the building, which lasted until 1 a.m.

Officials said all residents were taken to the Best Western in Diamond Springs or stayed with family at homes nearby.

No one was injured in the incident or evacuation process, but Cottonwood Senior Apartments’ buildings have been red-tagged by the city and county until an investigation is completed.
