Northwest Health names Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Thomas J. Rohs Is the new Chief Medical Officer for all Northwest Health hospitals, according to a release.

With a career spanning more than 25 years, Rohs has demonstrated exceptional clinical expertise with special interests in medical staff and professional leadership development, as well as extensive experience in hospital operations and community and board relations, a release said.

Rohs is a graduate of The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his General Surgery residency and Surgical Critical Care fellowship at the University of Michigan Hospitals. He has practiced general and trauma surgery in Kalamazoo, Michigan for the last 25 years, the release said.

Indiana Dunes Tourism awards $49,411.85 in grants

Indiana Dunes Tourism (IDT) recently awarded $49,411.85 to fund community projects, marketing initiatives and unique events aligning with Indiana Dunes Tourism’s mission, according to a release.

Indiana Dunes Tourism’s 2024 grant recipients are 219 Taproom, Chesterton Branding and Leadership Corporation, Dig the Dunes LLC, Duneland Bike-n-Bar LLC, Ewalt Jahnz Porter County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 165 Inc., Humane Indiana, Indiana Audubon Society, Izaak Walton League of America’s Porter County Chapter, Le Tour de Shore LLC, Leons Heroes, Northwest Indiana Junior Golf Association, Northwest Indiana Paddling Association, Portage Parks, Porter County Aging and Community Services and The Market on 12.

Awards fell into one of three categories: Community Development Projects (maximum request $5,000), Events (maximum request $2,500) and Marketing (maximum request $2,500).

Restaurant sets June 1 opening in Miller

A new restaurant has set an opening date in Gary’s Miller section.

The Brass Idol, led by chef Daryn Frank, will open June 1 at 5900 Miller Ave., according to a release.

Director named for Gabis Arboretum

Sarah Reed has officially taken on the responsibilities of Director of Operations at Gabis Arboretum, according to a release.
Reed, who joined the Arboretum in 2014, has served in various capacities, leveraging her passion to create enriching experiences for thousands of visitors, fostering appreciation for our natural environment, native flora and local wildlife, the release said.

She holds both a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctorate from Valparaiso University, the release said.

Counseling center opening 2nd location

Survive & Thrive Counseling Inc. is expanding its services with the addition of its new Griffith location June 1, according to a release.

Survive & Thrive’s additional office at 2009 W. Glen Park Ave., Griffith, will offer the same services as its Merrillville location at 1457 E. 84th Place, providing counseling services for children, adolescents, adults, women, couples, families and LGBTQ clients, the release said.

Concert benefiting Cancer Resource Centre coming in June

American English, a Beatles tribute band, will perform at 7 p.m. June 21 in a benefit for the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster.

The event is planned for the Theatre at the Center, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster.

American English features Eric Michaels as Paul McCartney, Jim Irizarry as John Lennon, James Paul Lynch as George Harrison, and Tony Giangreco as Ringo Starr. Duneland YMCA announces community park investor

Cleveland-Cliffs is an investor in the new Healthy Living Campus development of the Duneland YMCA, according to a release.

The new 20-acre community park, known as the Cleveland Cliffs Community Park, will be part of the Healthy Living Campus and is made possible with support from The Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation. The park will be on the east side of the building, facing 8th street in between Morgan and Porter avenues, in downtown Chesterton, the release said.

The park will feature walking paths, gardens, gathering space and elements to enhance environmental sustainability. The Duneland YMCA believes that the Cleveland-Cliffs Community

Park would attract at least 200 daily visitors, with upwards of 500 visitors during the warmer season, the release said.

PNW designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) has earned official designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), the largest HSI in the state, according to a release.

Upon completion of assessment, the U.S. DOE designates colleges and universities as HSIs that have enrolled at least 25% of undergraduate full-time students who self-identify as Hispanic or Latino, the release said. Since the 2022-23 academic year, PNW has enrolled a full-time undergraduate student population that is more than 25% Latino. Within that population, approximately 70% are first-generation students. PNW’s enrollment figures also show it serves the most Latino students among all Northwest Indiana higher education institutions, the release said.

In 2023, the Biden-Harris administration awarded more than $40 million to HSIs around the U.S. to expand educational opportunities and improve retention for Latino students, the release said.
