This Burly Cargo Ship Is Getting Made Over Into a $62 Million Yacht

From Popular Mechanics

There's something profoundly satisfying about taking a vehicle built simply for getting the job done, and transforming it into something more unique and personal. Sometime, that means building your own home inside of an old Boeing 727 or building an office out of a shipping crate. Then, on the other end of the spectrum, there's this $62 million yacht that will be built from a cargo ship.

The project is an undertaking by Edmiston & Company, a big name in yachts and superyachts and other absurdly luxurious toys for the ultra rich. And this time, instead of coming up with something from scratch, the folks at Edmiston decided to see what they could do with something a little more rugged.

The boat you see above-the new yacht's base-is a VARD 1 Series "Platform Supply Vessel,"ships that VARD affectionately refers to as "the trucks of the sea." Generally used to deliver supplies to remote off-shore platforms and oil rigs, PSVs are seriously seaworthy ships, designed to tackle anything thrown at them, up to and including Arctic and Antarctic waters. Not only that, but they can be self-sufficient for as long as a month at a time.

The VARD 1 -08 Kilkea will hold onto all those features, including space for 36 guests and the capability of going on 30-day jaunts with no need to resupply. The ship will also be outfitted with a helicopter and, naturally, a new coat of paint. When all is said and done, it's expected to look like this:

Naturally anyone who is realistically in the market for a $62 million boat is accustomed to a certain amount of frivolous waste, but one can't help but imagine this yacht would cost a fortune to operate, while also contributing a non-trivial amount of additional pollution to the shipping world's already considerable carbon footprint. but if your an environmentally conscious multi-billionaire, maybe a $400 million sailing yacht is more your speed.
