Bunny bandit returns beloved pet to Johns Creek family

A pet rabbit is back home after its owner said it was stolen.

The owner says the woman who snatched the rabbit claimed to be a volunteer with “Bunny Rescue.”

Channel 2’s Tom Regan was in Johns Creek Wednesday, where the bunny bandit apparently was caught in the act by porch cameras.

‘Doc’ is the name of Theresa Graham’s bunny, which she adopted a few months ago.

He lives in a cage in the garage, but often takes a hop outside to nibble on some grass and plants.

“I essentially kind of trained him to live in here and out there, like the neighbors know that he lives here,” Graham said.

Last week, a woman showed up in the cul-de-sac with an animal crate, telling neighbors she worked with Bunny Rescues.

When Doc didn’t come home for the night, Graham grew concerned.

“The next day I called the Bunny Rescue place, and it’s in Kennesaw and they said they hadn’t had any new bunnies come in,” Graham explained.

Graham started asking neighbors to check their porch camera video. She also took a look.

“It turned out somebody showed up at my house, waited for me to leave for work, and they lured Doc out of the garage and essentially took him,” Graham said. From the footage, it looked as (if) she was able to pick him up, take him to the car and put him in the carrier.”

But, the suspected bunny bandit didn’t make a clean getaway. Surveillance video helped police identify her car, then a crucial break in the hare raising caper.

“When the cops called her about Doc she told the cops that a bunny shouldn’t live outside. The officer said you need to come and return the bunny or there will be a warrant out for your arrest,” Graham said.

Graham says the bunny napper showed up at the driveway the next day, with Doc in hand but offered no apology.

Graham says she’s happy to have Doc back.

Johns Creek police identified the woman arrested in the case as 38-year-old Vanessa Smet.

She was charged with misdemeanor theft by taking.
