Buick Enspire Electric SUV Concept Unveiled in China

In advance of the 2018 Beijing Motor Show, aka Auto China 2018, Buick has unveiled a sculpted, modern Enspire all-electric SUV concept with bold design elements and new technology. The General Motors brand, which boasts its highest sales in China, has developed a stylish, electric SUV concept study designed for the Chinese market that will be on display at the show next week (April 25-May 4).

On the outside, Buick’s Enspire concept features strong sculptural elements with concave character lines and swept-back roofline. Aerodynamics are emphasized with large air vents, an incorporated wing, sleek narrow strip lighting system, and blue grille with Buick emblem in front and a thin line lighting strip at the rear.

Power for the Enspire SUV comes from Buick’s eMotion electric propulsion system that generates combined battery-electric power of 410 kW distributed to all four wheels, which allows the electric vehicle (EV) to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4 seconds, according to the automaker. Buick claims the new Enspire has a driving range of up to 370 miles before needing a recharge. Additionally, the SUV concept’s battery can be fast-charged to 80% capacity within 40 minutes.

The interior of the Enspire electric SUV concept showcases a “surround skyline” theme with lower “theater-type seating” for a spacious, open feel. Natural wood grain and microfiber suede embellish the center console and armrests. New technology featured in this electric concept includes an OLED (self-illuminating) display screen for navigation, audio functions, and a head-up display system that relies on intelligent reality technology with 5G high-speed network connectivity.

The Enspire is one of the future concepts that will lead to GM’s promise to launch some 20 new EVs in the next five years. Buick, one of GM’s four brands, reports that it has sold more than 9 million vehicles in China since its introduction through the joint venture SAIC-GM in 1998. In the U.S. market, Buick, with its most popular Encore small SUV model, posted a low double-digit sales increase year to date through March, based on auto sales data tracked by J.D. Power and auto forecasting partner LMC Automotive.
