Buffalo man sentenced for attempted murder of girlfriend

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the attempted murder of his girlfriend in 2021, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday.

Christopher Walters, 36, shot his girlfriend in the torso during an argument at their apartment on Martha Avenue on April 24, 2021. Walters fled after shooting her, and the woman was transported to ECMC to be treated for a punctured lung, broken ribs and other internal injuries.

Walters was captured in Florida and was taken back to Western New York to face prosecution in May 2021.

He was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon in January 2023. The 25-years-to-life sentence was the maximum sentence as a persistent violent felony offender.

As part of the sentence, a final order of protection was issued, which lasts until 2091.
