The new name of the stadium was not the prominent topic of conversation in the Jim Kelly Club this afternoon at New Era Field amid the Bills and Giants contest. The tailgaters on this beautiful summer Saturday in Orchard Park were not deep in colloquy about Marcell Dareus announcing his decision to check himself in to a rehab center.

The families enjoying the 16th annual Kids Day were not all involved in passionate deliberation about the sudden and shocking, but understandable release of last year’s rookie touchdown sensation Karlos Williams. As Bills fans exited the stadium, they weren’t chanting “Super bowl” or talking Tom Brady smack after that impressive victory shutting out the Giants.

It’s a given that these exchanges took place knowing the amount of people there, but what several people I know were discussing was making sure they get out of traffic and either home or to some venue such as the Larkin Square.

Things we know this week about the Buffalo Bills

With all of the off field drama surrounding the Buffalo Bills, it still needs to be mentioned that they did shut out the New York Giants 21-0. The shutout was the first to occur in the preseason for Bills since 1996.

Although currently understaffed on defense, they were organized and several players stepped up for the team while they managed to keep some control on taking undisciplined penalties.

All three quarterbacks were sharp, but Tyrod Taylor clearly showed that this is his team and he has complete command of the offense. Taylor was calm, cool and collective in the pocket and when forced to avoid pressure. It is safe to say this game was only a preseason game with minimal game planning or film studying, but I still saw a lot of favorable things on both sides of the ball.

It is the truth that merely two hours prior to kickoff the team announced it had released last year’s shining rookie running back Karlos Williams. Playing in eleven games last season, Williams played a major role in Buffalo’s defending rushing champions offense.

He made a poor choice showing up this spring approximately 25-pounds over weight. If that was not bad enough, he was suspended by the NFL for violating the substance abuse policy.

He recently was reactivated by the team and had made very little progress improving his conditioning and as Whaley and Rex both explained ‘Unfortunately other players have passed him by’.

Marcell Dareus announced his decision to check himself in to a rehab center recently.

“After careful consideration of recent events within my life, I have made the decision to enter a rehabilitation facility. I feel this is the best decision for me, my family and my teammates as I move forward with my career. I appreciate the support of my teammates and the Bills organization through this process.”

Most likely The Bills front office or ownership were instrumental in guiding the Pro Bowl former first round draft pick in his possible life and career changing decision. Whatever the behind the scenes motives are; I think it is a very good decision especially after his comments when he was suspended about words not meaning a thing if nothing is done about it.

A dull moment is rarely in existence at One Bills Drive. Candidly, that is an understatement.
