Buffalo Bills must re-sign Mike Gillislee this offseason

One of the biggest unsung heros from last season across the entire NFL, Mike Gillislee was someone that made a big difference for the Buffalo Bills last season. Being retained after the preseason release of Karlos Williams, Mike Gillislee proved that he was more than just a filler type player thanks to the success he had in his limited time on the field.

Having played in only eight combined games between 2013 and 2015, Mike Gillislee was someone who carried no fanfare upon his arrival to the Buffalo Bills in 2015. Coming in when the team lost star running back LeSean McCoy, Gillislee put up some solid numbers rushing the football. Recording 267 yards in five games, the former Florida Gator also scored three touchdowns.

On the Bills roster entering the 2016 preseason, many doubted that Gillislee would make the roster. However, upon the release of Karlos Williams, Mike Gillislee jumped up to the number two running back position. Playing in 15 of the Bills 16 games last season, Gillislee had a breakout season as he ran for 577 yards, 5.7 yards per rush, and recorded nine total touchdowns.

With McCoy being taken out of the game on goal line situations, Mike Gillislee became the short yardage back for this offense late in the season. Proving his worth with eight rushing touchdowns, Gillislee showed that he is a talented secondary running back. Even with a young Jonathan Williams on the roster, Gillislee is someone that is extremely talented and comes at a cheap price.

A potential free agent this offseason, Mike Gillislee is someone the Buffalo Bills should prioritize in their re-signing phase. While Gillislee will be a restricted free agent this offseason, the Bills would have to tender an offer to him first before the free agency period opened. Even then, it is possible that a team could pay a compensatory draft pick and sign the player.

Averaging 12.1 rushes per touchdown, Mike Gillislee is someone a lot of teams could be interested in this offseason. While he will never be an every down running back, he is someone that can be depended on in goal line situations and on passing downs. With Gillislee playing such an important role in our offense last season, the Bills must do everything possible to try and re-sign him.
