Well, the Buffalo Bills have found themselves in sticky situations before. This one though, appears to be one of the worst, even though it only concerns the backup player for a potential position. However, that position, is the most important one on the team, quarterback.

With EJ Manuel looking likely not to be on the Buffalo Bills roster come week one, the backup quarterback position looks certain to be going to fourth round draft pick Cardale Jones. While this is only the backup position, this could quickly get out hand if not handled carefully.

Starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor started in fourteen games last season for the Bills. Missing two games due to a MCL sprain, Taylor’s status as a dual threat was threatened by this injury. Though he rebounded to full strength, there is no guarantee a quarterback who likes to run won’t be injured again.

For now at least, it appears as if the Bills will be proceeding into the 2016 season with former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones as the backup. Though Jones has the potential to be a good quarterback in the future, right now he is just raw, athletic talent.

While that would be okay for any other positional need, a backup quarterback with questionable decision making, a small sample size in college and erratic at times passing habit, Jones could get the Bills in trouble. With the team definitely looking to make a run at the playoffs this season, the situation could endanger those hopes.

Should Taylor suffer another injury this season, the likely starter would be Cardale Jones. Putting all this hope into a player that only started in eleven games in college while also being benched last season at Ohio State seems to be a really big gamble by the Buffalo coaching and front office staff.

While I do believe Jones could be a quality player in a few years, that time is not yet now. Should the Bills enter the regular season with the quarterback depth chart setup in it’s current likely fashion, Buffalo will be daring fate to intervene. For their playoff chances, they better hope it does not.
