Bucs avoid sweep with low-scoring win at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WJHL) – After a combined 39 runs in the first two games of the SoCon series between ETSU and UNC Greensboro, the two teams only produced seven on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue and Gold scored two in the sixth and two in the eighth to scrap out a 4-3 win.

Nobody crossed home plate until that sixth inning, as Cody Miller sent a two-run homer to the parking garage in right field. UNCG answered back with an RBI-double in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the deficit in half.

The Bucs’ lead stretched back out when Noah Gent doubled to the gap in right-center field, plating both Tommy Barth and Miller for a 3-1 edge.

Luke Holland homered in the eighth inning, while Caleb Cozart drove home a run in the ninth, cutting the Spartans’ deficit to just 4-3 in the final frame.

But, with a man in scoring position, Owen Kovacs earned a fly out to end the game and notch his fourth save of the season.

Michael Harpster earned his fourth win on the mound for ETSU, going 8.0 strong innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits, while striking out five batters.

ETSU (17-9, 3-3 SoCon) travels to UNC Asheville on Tuesday at 5 p.m., before welcoming Mercer to town for its first home conference series on Friday.
