Buckley Farms brings attention to East Texas with sought after onions

MT. SELMAN, Texas (KETK) – Tim Buckley has owned Buckley Farms with his wife Melinda in Mt. Selman since 1981 as well as a farm stand in Flint since 2006.

As wildfires in the Panhandle continue to burn more than 1.2 million acres, East Texas businesses and organizations are asking for donations to help affected ranchers and farmers.

Buckley said he always plants a special onion that is highly sought after.

“These are the Noonday Onions, which is a yellow granex, but they’re sweet, you know, they’re not hot at all,” said Buckley

With a high customer demand, Buckley chose to plant over 63,000 onions this year.

“I have people come from Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Arkansas to get onions,” said Buckley.

He said the late start to planting hasn’t had an impact on the onions. So far, the vegetables are doing well.

“It was delayed a couple of weeks on account of the big rain we had and then we had some cold weather there when the ice came and that delayed us. After that, we got to plant them,” said Buckley.

Even with the delay, Buckley said, it shouldn’t affect how the onions grow or when they’ll be harvested.

“They should come on and grow, they really grow a lot in April and the first of May, so they ought to come on, hopefully,” said Buckley.

The coveted onions should be ready to pick in mid-May. Buckley Farms said once they have enough produce to sell, their farm stand at the four-way stop in Flint will be open to customers.

Once the farm stand opens, you will have a chance to get the long awaited Noonday Sweet Onions.
