Buccaneers signing former safety Jordan Whitehead to two-year deal: reports

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — After rumors began to swirl, it appears the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are adding a familiar face to their roster, per reports.

On Wednesday, just after quarterback Baker Mayfield officially inked his three-year, $100 million deal with the Bucs, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport announced that safety Jordan Whitehead is rejoining his former team.

The two-year deal, which was first reported by Twitter account @LeroyInsider, is worth $9 million and has a max value of $10.5 million.

Fans who’ve been following along with the Bucs’ free agency transactions may not be surprised by this new deal, as Whitehead’s former and now future teammates showed support for his return.

Bucs’ running back Rachaad White tweeted Wednesday, “Bring Whitehead back 💯‼️‼️” a notable stance considering White didn’t play with the safety. Whitehead has also been liking tweets about his return.

Linebacker Devin White also shared a video to social media of him and Whitehead from their playing days, saying, “Literally my evil twin @jwhite_3 Shii finna get right though.”

The 26-year-old is coming off a two-year stint with the New York Jets, where he started every game and rarely came off the field. He joined the Jets in free agency in the 2021 season after spending four years in Tampa.

According to ESPN, Whitehead “played the game of his life” in the 2023 NFL season opener, as he intercepted Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen three times in the Jets’ overtime victory on Monday Night Football.

Whitehead finished the 2023-24 season with a career-high four interceptions and nine passes defended, which tied a career-high, made 97 tackles, and allowed just six touchdown passes as the nearest defender.

He was drafted by the Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
