Bryan Fuller ‘Not Involved’ in ‘Star Trek: Discovery’: ‘It Is Bittersweet’

When Bryan Fuller stepped down from the showrunner role on CBS’ upcoming sci-fi streaming series “Star Trek: Discovery,” the idea was that he would still be contributing creatively. Fuller had penned the first two scripts and mapped out the arc of the season and the show’s mythology before handing the reins over to executive producers Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts.

But in a new interview with Newsweek, Fuller said he is “not involved” with the production at all at this point. “Ultimately, with my responsibilities [elsewhere], I could not do what CBS needed to have done in the time they needed it done for Star Trek,” Fuller told Newsweek. “It felt like it was best for me to focus on landing the plane with ‘American Gods.’”

“American Gods” is slated for a 2017 debut on Starz. Fuller is currently in post-production on the series, which shot primarily in Toronto.

Fuller retains an executive producer credit on “Star Trek: Discovery,” which just signed its first three cast members: Michelle Yeoh as the captain of the starship Shenzou, Anthony Rapp as an astromycologist (space fungus expert), and Doug Jones as a science officer of an alien species. The series was the first announced project to be produced exclusively for CBS’ proprietary, $5.99-a-month streaming service, CBS All Access. It’s set to premiere in May.

And if CBS orders a second season? “They have my number and if they need me I will absolutely be there for them,” Fuller said.
