Brush fire threatens structures in Lucerne Valley

A brush fire scorched 7 acres and threatened structures in Lucerne Valley before firefighters got in under control on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The fire was first reported about noon in the area of Custer Avenue and Azurite Road, according to San Bernardino County Fire Department and CAL FIRE officials.

It reached between 2 and 3 acres in size within an hour and posed an "immediate structure threat," CAL FIRE said via social media.

The fire displayed a slow to moderate rate of spread, with the potential to reach 20 acres, according to the agency.

Firefighters prioritized defending structures as they worked to control the flames with the aid of water-dropping aircraft.

The fire reached just over 7 acres in size before forward progress was halted about 2:40 p.m., according to CAL FIRE. No Structure damage was reported.

Crews were expected to remain at the scene into the evening to continue "mop up" operations and strengthen containment lines, officials added.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
