Rural Brunswick County could soon see an outdoor music venue.

Cumberland Woods hopes to be the area’s newest outdoor music and event venue, looking to open near Bolivia this year, according to its webpage. Aiming to bring an outdoor events space between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Bolivia sits some 20 miles south of downtown Wilmington and 40 miles east of Myrtle Beach.

Along Galloway Road NE, in unincorporated Brunswick County and near Bolivia, Cumberland Woods says it would sit on “350 acres of woodlands and lakes,” offering “music venues, camping, event facilities, hiking trails and other outdoor activities.”

The business’s webpage lists 1101 Galloway Road NE in Bolivia as its address. The StarNews reached out to Cumberland Woods for an interview but had not heard back by the time of publication.

News of the planned venue sparked concern from some area residents.

An online petition began circulating in late February titled, “Halt the Cumberland Woods Outdoor Event Venue in Bolivia, NC!”

Ash Ramos, a Brunswick County resident, created the petition on change.org, an online petition platform. The petition argues demand for such a space is lacking.

“There is zero demand for and outdoor event venue,” Ramos wrote in the petition description.

Nearby outdoor music venues include the Live Oak Bank Pavilion at Riverfront Park in downtown Wilmington and Greenfield Lake Ampitheater at Greenfield Park, also in Wilmington. Live Nation manages both Wilmington venues.

Nearby Myrtle Beach also offers several live music venues, including the House of Blues, the Carolina Opry Theater and many others.

In addition to the lack of demand for a space Cumberland Woods is proposing, Ramos added the development of the land would be “detrimental to the surrounding environment and wildlife.”

“The noise pollution from loud music and increased traffic will not only be a nuisance but will also significantly degrade the quality of life for local residents and wildlife alike,” Ramos continued.
