New Brunswick man charged with DWI, assault in hit-and-run with pedestrian

NEW BRUNSWICK - A 31-year-old city man has been arrested in connection with an early Monday hit-and-run crash in which a 25-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured.

Abel Bustos-Medel was arrested and charged with assault by auto and leaving the scene of a serious bodily injury accident, both third-degree crimes, and driving under the influence, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone announced.

Around 1:24 a.m. Monday, New Brunswick police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in in the area of 100 Jersey Ave.

When officers arrived they found a 25-year-old man with serious injuries. The man was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he was listed Monday afternoon in critical condition, according to the prosecutor's office.

An investigation by New Brunswick Police Officer Mark Smith and Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Sgt. Jonathan Berman discovered that a sedan driven by Bustos-Medel struck the victim on Jersey Avenue and then fled the scene.

The vehicle was later spotted on Livingston Avenue with damage consistent with a pedestrian crash and Bustos-Medel was arrested without incident, according to the prosecutor's office.
