This Brunswick County hospital is expanding. Here’s what to know.

A Brunswick County hospital will soon have a greater capacity in its emergency department.

Dosher Memorial Hospital announced last month site preparations were underway at the corner of E. 9th and N. Howe streets in Southport, where its new 8,000-square-foot emergency department will soon sit.

The new emergency department will be more than double the size of the previous facility. The additional space will allow for more beds and better workflow. The construction of the new-and-improved emergency department facility is part of the first phase of the hospital’s seven-year master facility plan.

“We are excited to begin our emergency department build; however, these renovations are more than buildings,” said Lynda Stanley, Dosher Memorial Hospital president and chief executive officer. “They represent our commitment to care for our local residents and to contributing to the health and wellbeing of our patients for years to come.”

In April 2023, the hospital announced the commencement of Phase One of the plan. The phase is expected to take three years to complete and, along with the construction of the new emergency department, will include the expansion of the hospital’s pharmacy and lab, the addition of three provider workspaces at Dosher Medical Plaza and the construction of two provider pods on Oak Island.

According to a live-streamed view of the construction site, the existing structures at the site were demolished and removed in mid-March.

Once the new facility is complete, the emergency department’s capacity will increase. The new facility will have 14 treatment spaces, four more than the current 10 spaces. The new facility will also include six to eight vertical care chairs, a move that the hospital says will “streamline wait times and care for patients of lower acuity.”

“As our community grows, Dosher must continue to grow as well,” Stanley said in an earlier news release.

The old emergency department facility will be converted into clinic space. Construction of the new facility will not disrupt the hospital’s current emergency room services.

The capital improvement projects included in Phase One of the hospital’s master plan were paid for through community tax dollars.
