LIBERTY, Mo. — Life in prison. That’s what two brothers could face if convicted in the March 2 shooting outside North Kansas City High School.

The Smallwood brothers appeared in separate courtrooms at the Clay County Courthouse for Monday afternoon arraignments, but their pleas were the same — not guilty.

Michael Smallwood, 19, and his brother Lavon’Dre Smallwood, 18, face eight felonies in all, related to a Saturday night argument that turned into a shootout outside a basketball game.

North Kansas City police said their investigators collected 50 shell casings from that scene, where two people were shot, including an innocent bystander.

Both Michael and Lavon’Dre are charged with armed criminal action and unlawful use of a gun after taking their handguns inside the school gym that night, according to court documents.

Each man is being held on a $75,000 bond. Both men told the court they’ve each hired defense attorneys.

Lavon’Dre Smallwood is due to return to court for a bond hearing next Monday, March 25. Michael Smallwood has a bond hearing scheduled for the next morning, March 26.
