Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis heard from quarterback Cam Newton following Howard’s big upset of UNLV.

Howard’s quarterback is Newton’s little brother Caylin. A true freshman, Caylin had 21 carries for 190 yards and two touchdowns in the 43-40 win over the Rebels. It’s the biggest upset vs. the spread in college football (gambling) history.

Cam Newton said Thursday that he followed the game on his phone — “There was a lot of refreshing going on” — and that he gave his teammate Davis some grief this week.

“I was teasing Thomas, I said man listen, Georgia needs a winner,” Cam Newton said at his press conference. “And every Newton I know is a winner. They missed out on yet another one.”

A native of Atlanta, Caylin Newton was a three-star recruit as an athlete according to Rivals.

Cam said Caylin’s game was a tribute to hard work and tried to be as supportive of his brother as possible during his recruiting process. The only scholarship offer listed on Caylin’s Rivals page is one from Savannah State.

And Cam also said he’d prefer if Caylin wasn’t always referred to as his little brother.

“I got my hands full with trying to follow up a great performance by him,” Newton said. The Panthers open the season Sunday at San Francisco. “I just see all the notoriety he’s been getting and it’s ‘Cam Newton little brother’, ‘Cam Newton’s little brother.’ I just would prefer his name be Caylin. He’s deserved that right. Hopefully this is not the highest point of his career with him being a true freshman. He’s still got a long way to go.”
