Brothers featured on 'Last Chance U' charged in connection to fatal stabbing
Two former college football players featured on Netflix series “Last Chance U” were charged Wednesday in connection to a fatal stabbing in Tennessee.
According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, brothers Camion Patrick and Isaiah Wright were each hit with a criminal homicide charge in the death of 18-year-old Caleb Thomas Radford, who died July 25. Patrick, 22, is a student at Indiana University who played two seasons for the Hoosiers before being granted a medical hardship waiver in July. The waiver allowed Patrick, who suffered both knee and shoulder injuries at IU, to remain on scholarship.
Wright, 22, most recently was on the roster at West Georgia University, but he left the team ahead of the 2017 season.
Both were arrested Wednesday — Patrick in Bloomington, Indiana, and Wright in Harriman, Tennessee. Per ESPN, two other suspects in the killing were arrested on Aug. 3.
Patrick was taken into custody by campus police Wednesday morning. He remained in custody in Bloomington, Ind., pending his extradition to Blount County. An Indiana University spokesman confirmed Thursday morning Patrick has been suspended.
Wright was arrested Wednesday in Harriman and was expected to be transferred to the Blount County Jail.
Patrick was once verbally committed to Tennessee, but academics forced him to enroll at East Mississippi Community College in 2013. He redshirted his first season but was a big part of EMCC’s run to the junior college national championship in 2014. He accepted a scholarship to IU and was the program’s offensive scout team player of the year in 2015, earning high praise from the coaching staff.
Patrick was poised for a big role in 2016, but he tore his ACL in spring practice and later injured his shoulder. Even with the nagging ailments, Patrick played in 10 games, catching six passes for 154 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 10 yards and a score on four attempts.
Wright also attended EMCC and was featured in the first two seasons of the show, which followed EMCC’s 2015 and 2016 seasons. In Season 2, Wright and Patrick spoke about their challenging upbringing. The show also highlighted Wright, the team’s starting running back and once a top JUCO prospect, while he dealt with injuries and had issues with head coach Buddy Stephens. Wright was being recruited by several FBS programs, but ended up signing with West Georgia.
