Brooklyn Now Has a Park Named After Adam Yauch

The late Beastie Boy Adam Yauch (a.k.a MCA) has received the "ultimate honor for a kid from New York City" with a Brooklyn Heights park named after him as of Friday afternoon. Yauch, who passed away at the age of 46 from throat cancer almost exactly one year ago, grew up in the neighborhood—just down the street from the park—and used to go there as a kid. "Me and Adam were hanging out in high school late one night just walking around Brooklyn and we ended up in this park and he was telling me about he played here as a kid," fellow Beastie Boy Adam "Ad-Rock" Horowitz told NY1. "So, when we were thinking about something nice to do that would be long lasting we said, you know, Yauch should have a park." And now he does:

In a dedication ceremony Friday afternoon, city officials, along with Ad Rock, Yauch's mother and Yauch's wife changed the Palmetto Playground to the Adam Yauch Park. What looks like a touching ceremony from the program included planting Dutch iris bulbs to "serve as a symbol of life and inspire good memories of Adam Yauch."

MCA's mother Frances Yauch (pictured left below) got a standing ovation after her "eloquent" remarks, reports USA Today. "All the kids he knew in the '80s had bands; that's what kids did," she said. "Adam made us so proud of him, and I'm proud to have this park in his name."
