Brooklyn Nine-Nine Review: "Bureau" Investigation

This was a solid episode of Nine-Nine, with a few surprising twists that have me excited for next week. It employed the A,B,C story structure that I don’t always love, but the plots were related enough here for it not to bother me as much as it usually does.

The FBI break-in delivered the funniest moments of the episode; the coaching montage in particular was a thing of beauty. It let Terry and Gina get in on the heist to humorous effect, and Rosa doing yoga in random places was one of the better visual gags of the season. We were also treated to that amazing “Sex and the City” scene, complete with Holt yelling passionately about Mr. Big. Holt and Bob were hilarious together, especially their “Let’s break into the FBI” exchange delivered with no change in inflection. It reminded me of this gem from Parks and Rec, which you will now have stuck in your head all day, so I apologize. I figured Bob had to be playing them, especially with the folder bit, but I don’t mind a foregone conclusion when it’s executed as humorously as it was here.

Something that did surprise me was Gina and Terry’s subplot, which took a right turn when Terry accused Gina of not taking her job seriously. It was harsh, especially coming from a guy who’s usually so kind, but it ended up being a nice moment for Gina as she pointed out that she wouldn’t be there helping him if she didn’t take it seriously. For all of her dramatics, Gina is very self-aware; she knows when things need to be taken seriously and when there’s room for a little fun, and I’m sure Terry accusing her of otherwise stung a little. She handled it like a champ, though, using her social media savvy to figure out what really happened. It was actually nice to see Terry mess up a little bit here, especially because he’s usually the one keeping people in line.

Amy and Boyle’s adventures in the women’s prison mostly continued so Amy could drop that bombshell at the end of the episode, but the adoption part of it was a cool surprise. New dad Charles will be a comedy gold mine, and it’ll be interesting to see how it affects his job and his relationship with Jake.
