Brooklyn cop opens fire on fleeing SUV that struck fellow officer: NYPD

An NYPD cop opened fire on a fleeing SUV that struck another officer during a violent vehicle stop in Brooklyn early Friday, police said.

The two officers pulled over a gray Toyota SUV near the corner of Hegeman and Van Siclen Aves. in East New York about 12:45 a.m., but when the cops got out of their squad car and approached the vehicle, the driver hit the gas and sped off.

The SUV clipped one of the cops, striking the officer’s ankle. The cop’s partner shot at the escaping SUV, but didn’t hit anything, an NYPD spokesman said.

Both officers were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the SUV fled the scene. No arrests have been made.

The NYPD Force Investigation Squad is investigating the shooting.

NYPD policy discourages shooting at moving vehicles unless something other than the vehicle is being used as a weapon. There are exceptions, based on circumstance. The department reviews these shootings on a case-by-case basis.
