THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — A man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing Brandon Hendricks, a 17-year-old high school basketball standout, the Bronx district attorney said Friday.

Najhim Luke, 26, of the Bronx, was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in January, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. Luke will also get five years of post-release supervision, authorities said.

Luke opened fire at people who had gathered for a barbecue in Morris Heights in June 2020, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. One of the stray bullets fatally struck Hendricks, who was a recent graduate of James Monroe High School.

“Brandon was killed just days after his high school graduation,” Clark said in a statement. “His dream to play college basketball was ripped away when he was shot with a stray bullet. I want to thank Brandon’s mother, who through this tragedy, has turned her pain into purpose. She has been a vocal advocate against gun violence and has been working with our office to bring meaningful change to the community.”
