Broken pipe spews water onto SR 99 in South Seattle for hours

A broken pipe spewed water onto a southbound lane of State Route 99 for nearly three hours Monday morning.

The issue was reported at about 3:50 a.m. Monday.

The southbound HOV lane was closed on SR 99 on the First Avenue South Bridge at West Marginal Way in South Seattle.

The Washington State Department of Transportation told us the water came from a broken fire hydrant pipe to the bridge.

Video from the scene showed a lot of water coming from the pipe, which is in mid-air, not far from the road surface.

Water pooled in the HOV lane and the spray coming from underneath the bridge was a distraction for drivers. However, the southbound lane of West Marginal Way South at Highland Park Way Southwest was flooded, according to Seattle Police.

Seattle Public Utilities workers turned the water off at about 6:45 a.m.
