‘Broad City’ Season 4: Abbi and Ilana on Making Trump a 4-Letter Word

The name “Trump” may be five letters long, but in the world of Broad City, it’s being treated as a four-letter word. For the fourth season of the hit Comedy Central series, which premieres on Sept. 13, creators and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson made the decision to replace the current President’s last name with a profanity-hiding bleep in every episode.

Well, every episode except the first one, which flashes back to a more innocent time before the Broad City versions of Ilana and Abbi first encountered each other… and when Donald Trump was merely a blustery New York businessman and reality TV show star. “Our premiere is the origin story of this stellar friendship,” Glazer explains to Yahoo TV. “In the past, his name did not have to be bleeped because he didn’t have the platform he has today. Airtime seems to be one of the most valuable currencies in our world today, and we didn’t want to add to his currency.”

When the show snaps back to the present, though, the bleeping will be in full effect, which Jacobson says reflects their own state of mind. “[The characters] are feeling how a lot of us are feeling, and so they’re talking about what’s going on and they’re frustrated. We actually rewrote the season after [the election] and it just felt right.” And Glazer, for one, wouldn’t mind if life imitated art in this respect. “I kind of wish I could bleep it in my real life!”

Broad City premieres Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 10:30 p.m. on Comedy Central.
