Brittney Griner's return to WNBA with Phoenix Mercury to be broadcast by ESPN

Brittney Griner's return to the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury will be broadcast on ESPN as the first of 25 regular season WNBA games to air on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC in the upcoming season.

The game, the Mercury's season opener at the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday, May 19, will also air on ESPN Plus.

The game will be one of four nationally televised games for Phoenix, with the team's home opener at Footprint Center in Phoenix on Sunday, May 21 against the Chicago Sky the second.

That game will also air on ESPN.

The Mercury's game against the Atlanta Dream in Atlanta on Tuesday, July 25 will also air on ESPN, and the team's game at the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, Sept. 10 is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN2.

Griner and the Mercury are currently preparing for the Mercury's 2023 season. Griner was released from Russia in December in a prisoner swap for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout after being detained in the country for 294 days.

She missed all of last season, last playing in 30 games in 2021 for Phoenix, averaging 20.5 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game that season. Griner signed a 1-year contract with the team in February.

The Mercury are scheduled to play 40 games in the upcoming season.

Nationally broadcasted games on other platforms and networks, including CBS Television Network, Paramount+, CBS Sports Network, NBA TV, Meta Horizon Worlds and Twitter, will be announced later, as will the team’s local broadcast slate, the Mercury and WNBA announced.
