Two British tourists have been shot in a Brazilian city as muggers riding a motorcycle tried to snatch their belongings.

Police said the two men, who are brothers aged 20 and 26, were attacked while walking back to their hotel in the northeastern city of Porto Seguro on Friday.

The victims told investigators two people riding a motorcycle approached them and tried to take their backpack.

When one of the brothers refused to hand over his bag, the assailants opened fire on them.

One received a fractured finger after being shot in the hand, while the other was hit twice in the arm, causing a broken bone.

The victims, who are yet to be named, were taken by paramedics to the Luís Eduardo Magalhães Hospital, where they are said to be in a stable condition.

Police have not identified the perpetrators of the shooting.

Brazilian television network Globo said the incident was being investigated by Porto Seguro’s Tourist Protection Office.

The city is located in the south of the state of Bahia, around 500 miles from Rio de Janeiro.

Bahia has one of the highest violent crime rates in Brazil, although Porto Seguro has begun to establish itself in recent years as a tourist destination.
