Brief power outage affects thousands in Bourne, Sandwich. What was the cause?

An issue with power transmission equipment was the culprit behind a brief, but widespread power outage affecting hundreds of Eversource customers in Sandwich and Bourne on Tuesday afternoon.

About 7,500 customers — approximately 5,500 in Bourne and 1,500 in Sandwich — lost power, according to the company. The outage was caused by an issue originating from a transformer at a substation in Sandwich. Transformers are generally used to convert the voltage of electricity as it is transmitted into the power grid.

"With the use of distribution automation technology we have installed on our system, power was restored to all customers within six minutes," Eversource senior media relations specialist Kyle Costa explained in an email Tuesday evening.

An Eversource crew was dispatched to assess the transformer and will conduct any necessary repairs, he noted.
