Brie Larson (Finally) Confirmed As Captain Marvel – Comic-Con

Near the end of Marvel’s supersized Hall H panel this evening at Comic-Con, the studio made official what the rest of the world has taken for granted as a fact since reports of her casting first emerged back in June: Brie Larson will be playing Carol Danvers — aka Captain Marvel — in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige made the announcement, and Larson surprised the crowd by showing up onstage. He called her the newest member of the Marvel family but did not say what movie in the Marvel Universe she might start with.

Larson earlier in the day had been on Warner Bros’ Hall H panel for Kong: Skull Island.

Debuting in 1968 as a human companion to the original Captain Marvel (the space alien Mar-Vell, pronounced the same way), Air Force pilot Danvers is Marvel’s sixth character to use that nom-de-superherosim name. She developed super powers of her own in a mid-’70s storyline and was given her own title, Ms. Marvel in 1977. She was named Marvel’s official Captain Marvel in 2012 in tribute to the original, killed off via cancer in a 1982 graphic novel, with the Ms. Marvel moniker going to Kamala Khan, Marvel’s first headlining Muslim character.

Fun fact: Danvers has usually been associated with Marvel’s “cosmic” line of heroes that notably includes the Guardians Of The Galaxy.

With that, the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe finally its first female-led superhero one step closer to reality. Captain Marvel was originally set for release November 2, 2017 but was pushed back a bit to make room for Spider-Man: Homecoming on Marvel’s release schedule. It’s now set to fly into theaters March 8, 2019.
