Bridgerton season 3 part 1 spoilers follow.

Bridgerton stars Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton have teased the revelation of Lady Whistledown's identity in the upcoming second half of season 3.

Coughlan plays Penelope Featherington, who has finally started to get romantic with Newton's Colin Bridgerton in the first half of the season, which released this week.

The thing threatening to ruin everything is, of course, the fact that Penelope is secretly gossip columnist Lady Whistledown, someone who Colin hates with a passion.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Coughlan said that it's always going to be a thing hanging over their already turbulent romance.

She explained that: "I always say to people, even if let's say episode one, for whatever reason, it would be terrible storytelling, but he arrives back in London, they both go, 'I forgive you now so maybe we should just go out and get married?'

"There would still be the horrible elephant in the room that is Lady Whistledown. She can't really ignore it forever. So I think no matter what, you know that that's going to be an issue for them."

"And at this point, he's kind of the person that's most angry at Whistledown because of how she's affected the people that he cares about," Newton added. "It really sort of puts you on edge, doesn't it? Things can't go too well."

The first half of season 3 ended with the duo finally getting it on, after years of friend-zoning and ruining chances of marriage with other people. The already-iconic carriage scene once again put female power and sensuality front and centre, and was all the better for it.

Bridgerton seasons 1-2 are streaming now on Netflix, along with Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Season 3 premieres in two parts, on May 16 and June 13.
