Bridge replacement on US 160 creates 40-mile detour

HARPER, Kan. (KSNW) – The Kansas Department of Transportation says replacing a bridge on U.S. Highway 160 will create a 40-mile detour.

Starting around June 3, crews will be replacing the bridge over Sand Creek, just east of Harper in Harper County. During construction, traffic will be diverted northeast on K-2 Highway, up to K-42, K-42 to K-49, and then south on K-49 back down to U.S. 160.

K-2, K-42, and K-49 are the only paved highways near that portion of U.S. 160. The majority of the roads in the area are dirt or not designed for highway traffic, which is why a long detour is needed.

Hesston-based King Construction Co. Inc. is the primary contractor for the $2,183,167 project. Construction is expected to take approximately one year to complete.
