Brewers 4, Mets 2
NEW YORK -- Carlos Gomez's fourth hit, an RBI single in the 10th inning, snapped a tie Saturday night and lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 win over the New York Mets in front of 29,326 at Citi Field.
Gomez also singled and stole second and third in the second, homered in the fourth, struck out in the sixth and singled in the eighth for the Brewers (74-87), who have won four in a row and six of their last seven.
The Mets (73-88) were on the verge of winning the game in the bottom of the ninth, when they tied the score and loaded the bases with one out against winning pitcher Donovan Hand (1-5). Hand issued walks to pinch-hitters Zack Lutz and Andrew Brown before Eric Young, who was hitless in his first four at-bats, singled just fair down the third base line to score pinch-runner Matt den Dekker.
Brown advanced to third and Young went to second on the throw. Hand then hit Lucas Duda to load the bases before David Wright -- who grounded out with the bases loaded and the score tied at 1-1 in the seventh -- hit a grounder behind second base that was snared by shortstop Jeff Bianchi, who touched second and fired to first to beat Wright.
The Brewers wasted no time retaking the lead in the 10th. Pinch-hitter Caleb Gindl led off with a four-pitch walk off losing pitcher Scott Atchison (3-3). Gindl went to third on a broken bat single by Jonathan Lucroy and scored when Gomez singled to right on Atchison's next pitch.
One out later, Yuniesky Betancourt -- whose sacrifice fly in the eighth inning gave the Brewers a 2-1 lead -- singled home Lucroy.
Alfredo Figaro earned his first big league save with a perfect bottom of the 10th.
Betancourt and Scooter Gennett each had two hits for the Brewers.
Daniel Murphy was 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, a stolen base and a walk for the Mets, who fell to 9-12 in extra inning games. The Mets have played 57 extra innings this season, three shy of the all-time record.
The Mets' Young and the Brewers' Jean Segura entered the day tied for the NL lead in stolen bases with 44, but the two combined to go 1-for-9 with no steal attempts. Segura, who missed the previous nine games with a strained right hamstring, left in a double switch in the eighth inning.
Jimmy Nelson had an impressive first big league start for the Brewers. He allowed the one run on just one hit and three walks -- all in the fourth inning -- while striking out four over five innings.
For the Mets, Aaron Harang allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven. He posted a 3.52 ERA and struck out 26 batters in 23 innings over four starts for the Mets, who signed him on Sept. 1, a day after he was released by the Mariners.
NOTES: ESPNNewYork.com reported Saturday afternoon that the Mets and manager Terry Collins are nearing an agreement on a two-year deal with an option for 2016. Collins is unsigned beyond Sunday. ... The Brewers, meanwhile, announced before the game that Ron Roenicke's entire coaching staff will return next season. ... Wright returned after missing Friday's game with a sore right thumb, which he suffered while falling after he was hit in the head by a pitch Thursday night. ... Brewers LF Khris Davis won't play the rest of the season after suffering a left hamstring strain trying to beat out an infield hit on Friday night.
