A photo of a firefighter breastfeeding her baby has been given almost universal praise after it was posted on Facebook.

The image of volunteer firefighter Angela Joy breastfeeding her daughter Verity has received more than 37,000 likes and more than 3,900 shares on Facebook since it was posted on Monday.

Ms Joy volunteers with the Tallygaroopna fire brigade in Victoria, Australia, and has four children.

The picture was posted on the Country Fire Authority Facebook page with the message, “One of the many faces of CFA in 2016”.

The CFA said the picture was taken at a community event and there were no fires nearby.

While there were some users who made negative comments about the picture, almost all of the Facebook messages were filled with support.

Facebook user Kavita Vecchi commented: “Raising a newborn and also volunteering for firefighters… what an amazing person. Well done. You are a role model.”

Belinda Baker said: “I think this is a beautiful picture of a wonderful mum who also volunteers.

“Congratulations Angela for being a mum first, finding the time to volunteer and juggling a busy lifestyle. You are amazing.”

Commenter Chris Thomas joked: “This is outrageous!!! I’m appalled! That pump on the fire truck doesn’t have a end cap! That’s just careless!”

Niki Jackson said: “But seriously, it’s just a boob. We’ve all seen them at some point. It is literally a chunk of flesh that helps to contain milk. Not the apocalypse”.

Ms Joy said she sent the picture to the Country Fire Authority after it asked for images that captured the spirit of the nation to mark Australia Day on Tuesday.

“To me it represented an Australian organisation having such a positive impact on women and mums, so to me it was a representation of my Australia,” she told The Guardian Australia.

“For the CFA, it was really about showing the diversity in the CFA – that mothers can be firefighters and fathers can be firefighters.”

The photo was taken by Ms Joy’s partner, Daniel Watson, at a party to celebrate the opening of a neighbouring fire station’s new shed at the end of 2014, when her daughter Verity, now two, was a few months old.

She said: “It was just a proud dad taking a picture of his partner and newborn baby.

“It was not chosen to be a political statement or anything like that. It was just a moment in time.”
