The powerful tremor struck off Ndoi Island, Fiji. However there is no tsunami threat from the earthquake because it was too deep.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said some small, non-hazardous tsunami waves had been observed.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 559.6 km, according to the USGS. It was initially reported as a magnitude 7.9.
