Fatalities reported after bridge collapses in Miami, falls on traffic passing underneath

A newly constructed pedestrian bridge in Miami has collapsed, falling onto eight vehicles passing underneath.

At least six people died following the bridge collapse at Florida International University on Thursday afternoon, according to the Associated Press. Ten others were transported to local hospitals with injuries.

The bridge was built over Southwest Eighth Street which consists of seven lanes.

The bridge was designed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, according to CNN.

Dry weather over the next few days will help crews work to clean up after the bridge collapse.

"No rain is expected in Miami through the weekend," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said.

"High temperatures will be in the 70s F into Friday, followed by temperatures in the 80s F over the weekend," Sosnowski added.

"The next chance for rain is on Wednesday when there will be the chance of a shower or thunderstorm."
