Brazil's Bolsonaro says back to work on Tuesday after surgery

SAO PAULO, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro said on Monday in a video from his hospital bed that he will back on the job on Tuesday, two days after having a hernia operation.

"Folks, I am just taking Monday off. Tomorrow I am back to work," Bolsonaro said in the video.

His office said Bolsonaro was in a stable condition after a successful five-hour operation to correct a hernia caused by the weakening of abdominal tissues from three previous operations after he was stabbed a year ago during the election campaign.

Vice President Hamilton Mourão, who took over as interim president before Bolsonaro's surgery, had been expected to continue in the post through Thursday.

It was not clear from Bolsonaro's video whether he plans to reassume the presidency on Tuesday. (Reporting by Pedro Fonseca and Maria Pai Palermo; Editing by Kevin Liffey)
