Brazil protesters vow to hold biggest demonstration yet against fare hike

SAO PAULO (AP) -- Brazilian protesters angered by a hike in bus and subway fares are promising to hold their biggest demonstration yet in Sao Paulo.

However, police say they will take a less confrontational approach and will not use rubber bullets during Monday's planned protest.

Authorities say they want to avoid a repeat of last week's bloody clashes in Sao Paulo. About 100 demonstrators were hurt during that violent protest last Thursday.

Protests in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities come as the nation hosts the Confederations Cup soccer tournament and prepares for next month's papal visit.

So far, the protests have had little impact on the games or fans attending them.

On Sunday, police dispersed demonstrators who were headed toward Rio's Marcana football stadium ahead of a match.
