This new Braselton business wants to help hone your ax-throwing skills
Jun. 11—A new Braselton business is offering an alternative to the traditional date nights and family outings, one that involves hurling axes at wooden targets.
Twisted Axes Throw House opened June 5, at 2345 Thompson Mill Road, just down the road from Papa Jack's Country Kitchen. The business is co-owned by DeAnna Hightower and Brian Shaw.
"I love it because it's different, and it doesn't get old," Hightower said. "I personally like being there and building relationships (with the customers). It's so great to give them tips and tricks, and see the excitement when they start to get bull's-eyes."
Hightower, who also runs Old Mill Nutrition in Flowery Branch, said Shaw, her fiancé, was the one who planted the idea of operating an axe-throwing business. The couple had been to several places that embraced the concept and found it an entertaining activity for kids and adults.
When Hightower noticed a building was available for lease by the same landlord who owns her other business' building, she seized the opportunity. Shaw and Hightower began renting the facility in April, and set to work transforming the former gym into a lively place fit for axe-hurling fun. Not affiliated with the Twisted Axes Throw House in Moore, Oklahoma, Hightower said the operation is a stand-alone business.
As people enter the front doors they'll see six double lanes with wooden targets, and a 1970 Ford F100 converted into a bar. Each lane, which includes two targets, can hold parties of up to 12 people. High tables are placed near the axe-throwing spaces so customers can set down their drinks as they play.
In addition to hard seltzer, beer, wine and nonalcoholic beverages, Twisted Axes offers small snack options and encourages people to order meals from local restaurants. Highitower said people can bring outside food into the business, just not drinks.
No one under 10 years old is allowed in the facility, unless approved by management. Only those 10 years and older can throw axes at the business. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and all players must provide a valid photo identification.
Hightower said everyone who throws axes must wear closed toe shoes and sign an accident waiver and release of liability form before playing.
As people begin their session of axe-throwing, an "AxePert" will provide a brief lesson on basic techniques and safety rules. Hightower said one of these staff members will be assigned to watch participants play and teach them several games once they become more confident with their axe-hurling abilities.
Customers can also reserve lanes for birthdays, corporate events and other special occasions.
People can book an hour and 45 minutes of axe-throwing for $35 per person by visiting twistedaxes.com, or opt for the walk-in rate of $25 per person for one hour.
