Branch County man charged following injury crash in Indiana

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. — Charles Beerman, 34, of Ovid Township, is facing charges following a crash Sunday evening in Orland, Indiana, which left another driver with critical injuries.

Steuben County Sheriff's deputies, emergency crews, and Orland firefighters responded to the intersection of SR 327 and CR 650 N around 6:30 p.m.

There were reports a two-vehicle crash had left one person unconscious and possibly trapped, according to a sheriff's press release.

Rescue personnel extracted 68-year-old Paul M. Pence of rural Orland from a green pickup truck that was facing a red pickup truck, deputies reported.

Beerman was driving the red pickup truck pulling a construction trailer on SR 327 two miles south of the Michigan state line.

According to police reports, as Beerman started to pass another vehicle in front of him in a no-passing zone, Pence, who was in front of the other vehicle, turned left in front of Beerman.

Both trucks spun off the road.

Samaritan air ambulance flew Pence to a Ft. Wayne hospital in critical condition, with head trauma and possible internal injuries.

The Steuben County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team investigated the crash.

Deputies booked Beerman into the Steuben County Jail on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction, and two misdemeanor drunk driving charges.

Beerman was held on a $5,000 bond.
