Bramcote: Ancient wall collapse extends road closure

The collapse of an ancient wall means a road due to reopen within days will now be closed until further notice.

Town Street, in Bramcote, was closed for gas works before the collapse happened on Sunday night, near a corner known as the Devil's Bend.

It had been due to reopen on 18 April, but Nottinghamshire County Council says "it is likely that the road will remain closed beyond this time".

Investigations into the cause of the collapse are taking place.

Part of the wall, which is several metres tall, also fell in 2021, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said.

Councillor Steve Carr, who represents the ward on Broxtowe District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, fears the whole wall may need to be replaced.

"Fortunately it was closed when it collapsed - goodness knows what would happen if there had been a car beneath it," he said.

"The concern is that it's compromised and could come down at any moment.

"It looks like it needs to be completely replaced. At the moment, the county council are trying to contact the landowners and find out who owns the wall."

The ongoing closure would mean a "massive detour" through Beeston for those who are unable to walk down the road, the LDRS said.

A highways manager from Nottinghamshire County Council said: "The cause of the collapse is currently unknown, with initial investigations being inconclusive and further investigations will be required before any repairs commence."

A spokesperson for Cadent said the collapse happened about 656ft (200m) away from where the gas works are taking place.

"We are continuing our work to replace a section of gas pipes, as the collapsed wall is not near our work," they said.

"Our road closure will be removed at the end of our works."
