BRAINTREE – The planning board is considering a proposal for the construction of a new automobile dealership at the former Fore River shipyard.

Quirk Car Dealerships wants to build a sales and service building with 199 parking spaces on a 3½-acre section of the shipyard for Quirk Genesis.

The dealership is now operating out of temporary quarters at the former Super Shine Car Wash at 411 Quincy Ave. Genesis is Korean automaker Hyundai's luxury brand.

Frank Marinelli, a lawyer for Quirk, said the 39-acre property at 575 Quincy Ave. is owned by Quirk and is permitted to store up to 1,300 vehicles. The 26,480-square-foot building would be near the storage area's security office.

"It fits very nicely in that corner," Marinelli said during the board's public hearing on the proposal Tuesday night.

He said the dealership building would have 15 service bays and represents an investment of several million dollars from Quirk.

The paved area of the site would be reduced and landscaped, Marinelli said.

As for traffic, Marinelli said a study done for Quirk estimates the dealership would generate an additional car every two to three minutes and would not cause a major change in the traffic flow at a nearby intersection.

He said the plans meet all the town's requirements, and auto dealerships are an allowed use in the area.

No one spoke in opposition to the plans at the hearing. The board is expected to decide on the proposal at its next meeting Oct. 11.

The Genesis dealership is Quirk's eighth along Quincy Avenue, the same street where  car dealer Daniel Quirk started his business with the purchase of the former Clark and Taber Chevrolet dealership in Weymouth Landing. That property is now the site of the Landing 53 apartments.
