Brad Pitt speaks about Angelina Jolie split for the first time: 'I was boozing too much'
Jaws dropped around the world when Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, citing a conflict over the celebrity couple’s six kids, last September.
The 41-year-old actress’s lawyer Robert Offer said in a statement at the time that the decision had been made “for the health of the family”.
Now her estranged husband has opened up in an interview with GQ Style magazine and admitted that he was downing enough booze during their marriage to “drink a Russian under the table”.
The star also revealed that he recently started therapy and has been sober for six months.
“I was boozing too much. It’s just become a problem. And I’m really happy it’s been half a year now, which is bittersweet, but I’ve got my feelings in my fingertips again.”
He added: “Truthfully I could drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka. I was a professional. I was good.”
Bravely speaking about the dark period in his life in a candid interview, he admitted he didn’t “want to live that way anymore” and drinks cranberry juice and “fizzy water” nowadays.
Brad added that his life as a Hollywood actor, husband to arguably the most beautiful woman in the world, and father two six adorable children, was like winning “the lottery”.
And his shock separation from Angelina had provided him the time to reflect on why he pursued certain vices and take responsibility for his actions.
“For me this period has really been about looking at my weaknesses and failures and owning my side of the street… I hit the lottery, and I still would waste my time on those hollow pursuits.”
Brad agreed to weekly supervised visits with his chidlren Maddox, 15, Pax, 13, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 10, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 8 after the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services launched an investigation into alleged “verbally abusive” with Maddox on a plane on September 14.
Now Brad said his main focus is now on his six kids and the impact his much publicised problems and their parents’ divorce will have on them in the future.
Speaking about the media attention his private life has received, he added: “I worry about it more for my kids, being subjected to it, and their friends getting ideas from it.
“And of course it’s not done with any kind of delicacy or insight—it’s done to sell. And so you know the most sensational sells, and that’s what they’ll be subjected to, and that pains me.”
