August 5: British rally legend Colin McRae was born on this date in 1968

While Britain has groomed plenty of star rally drivers, few rose as high as Colin McRae. The Scottish-born driver won the British Rally Championship in 1991 and '92 and won the World Rally Championship in 1995, becoming the first Brit to do so as well as the youngest ever to win the prestigious title, driving the iconic blue Subaru Impreza 555. McRae was born on this date in 1968 and would have been 45-years old. Tragedy struck in 2007, when McRae's helicopter crashed just a mile from his home in Lanark, Scotland, taking the life of the rally ace along with two family friends and his five year old son, Johnny.

Today, McRae's star shines as bright as it ever did. Few rally drivers boast the tenacity and car control of the Scot, as well as the adoration of an entire community. He was without question one of the greatest rally drivers to have ever lived, and responsible for the growth of the sport during his era. Watch the video below to see McRae at his very best.
