Boyfriend seen dodging SUV before woman fatally runs him over, Michigan officials say
A Michigan woman is accused of murder after investigators say she fatally ran over her boyfriend with an SUV.
William Clemons III, 42, was walking near a Speedway gas station in Flint when an SUV hit and killed him, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said at a May 14 news briefing shared by WNEM.
Police received a call at 6:17 a.m., May 5, from the manager of Speedway, Leyton said. Clemons was already dead by the time first responders arrived at the scene, and the vehicle that hit him was gone.
Investigators accessed the man’s phone and saw numerous recent calls, all from the same number, and “angry text messages” back and forth with a woman that Clemons had a romantic relationship with, according to Leyton. Officials didn’t share exactly what was said, but the messages were inflammatory and it was clear the relationship “had gone south.”
Surveillance video captured the moments leading up to Clemons’ death, which Leyton showed at the briefing.
In the video, a silver Chevy Traverse is seen pulling up near Clemons, and he appears to talk with the driver before the SUV suddenly veers left to hit him. He dodges the vehicle at first, but the driver takes another pass and runs him down, dragging him across an empty lot and into the street.
Investigators identified the owner of the vehicle as 36-year-old Candice Marie Patton, of Flint, WEYI reported.
Leyton said Clemons’ family also recognized the vehicle and told investigators it belonged to Patton, whom Clemons had been seeing.
Human skin was found stuck to the wheel wells of Patton’s Chevy, and fibers that matched Clemons’ clothing clung to the exhaust, according to Leyton.
Patton was arrested and faces a charge of first-degree murder, he said.
Flint is a roughly 70-mile drive northwest of Detroit.
