Boy riding a scooter, 17, killed by hit-and-run driver in Long Beach

A driver who police say was under the influence hit and killed a teenage boy riding a scooter in Long Beach early Sunday morning, according to authorities.

Long Beach police were dispatched to the area of Orange Avenue and South Street on reports of an injury collision at 12:40 a.m.

Upon arriving at the scene, authorities say they found an injured 17-year-old boy who was hit by a SUV while he rode a self-propelled scooter.

Life-saving measures were attempted on the boy, but he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. His identity is being withheld due to his age, Long Beach police said.

Investigations revealed that a woman behind the wheel of a 2012 Cadillac SRX hit the boy while driving northbound on Orange. She then fled the scene going northbound and later crashed into an apartment building on 6100 Orange Avenue.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the crash into the apartment building.

The woman left the vehicle on foot and fled the scene. She returned to the crash area a short time later, where she was met by police and arrested.

Police identified the woman as 35-year-old Compton resident Karen Mativa. She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit and run resulting in death or injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and assault with a deadly weapon with force.

Mativa is being held on $130,000 bail. No other details were immediately made available.
