Bowie High School student shot, killed by another student, Arlington police say

An 18-year-old Arlington, Texas, high school student was allegedly shot to death Wednesday afternoon by one of his peers, prompting a lockdown and investigation, police said.

Etavion Barnes, a student at James Bowie High School, died after being found by school resource officers "lying unresponsive on the ground," the Arlington Police Department said in a news release.

A timeline of events during Bowie High School shooting

Police received reports of shots being fired around 2:50 p.m., according to the news release. School resource officers at the high school responded and found Barnes lying on the ground outside near a portable building. The officers provided life-saving measures until paramedics arrived on the scene.

First responders said the victim had been shot up to six times and was unresponsive.

Barnes was taken by ambulance to Medical City Arlington, where he was pronounced dead at 3:27 p.m., according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown as officers began searching for the suspected shooter, according to officials.

What we know about the suspected shooter at Bowie High School

Officers located the suspected shooter, identified as Julian Howard, 17, and took him into custody without incident, according to the release.

The suspect was booked into Arlington City Jail and charged with one count of murder, according to inmate records.

According to Arlington ISD, both Barnes and Howard were students at the high school. While police have not revealed a motive for the shooting, they said Thursday they believe it was a targeted attack.

Police said they have not yet located the murder weapon or determined how the suspect may have obtained a gun.

Arlington ISD cancels classes at Bowie High School

Arlington ISD canceled classes at Bowie High School on Thursday and Friday. Counselors will be available on Friday from 9 a.m. until noon and then again next week. Classes will resume on Monday, April 29.
