Boulder police officers are now patrolling on e-bikes, and they can pull you over

DENVER (KDVR) — Bikes and horses have been a part of police patrols for quite some time, but now the Boulder Police Department is adding technology into one type of its patrols for some added speed.

That’s because the agency now has electric bikes for its patrol units.

It’s been a success, too: Officers on bikes have already made arrests, traffic stops and drug seizures thanks to the accessibility the bikes provide.

“These e-bikes are a great way to enhance public safety while being environmentally friendly,” the agency said on social media. “Tan lines aside, our officers love their ability to quickly respond to calls and remove dangerous drugs and other items from our streets.”

The Boulder Police Department’s new e-bikes arrived a few weeks ago, the agency said, and have mostly been deployed on the downtown corridor. The department plans to deploy patrol units on e-bikes throughout the rest of the Boulder community “soon.” The bikes will also be at community events.

Each of the bikes costs about $8,000 and is fitted with a “special police package,” which the department said includes graphics, lights and a “very loud siren.”

The officers on e-bikes will also be carrying Narcan, an opioid reversal agent, to administer when needed in addition to citation books for traffic-related stops.
