FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Vince Fong is up against Mike Boudreaux in the special election to finish the term of former House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy.

On Tuesday, May 21, voters will decide which of the two Republicans will take the special election and the congressional seat with it. While the special election will decide who will fill the remainder of McCarthy’s term, both Fong and Boudreaux are also running another campaign to determine who will represent California’s 20th congressional district for the term starting January 2025.

Why are there 2 separate elections to fill McCarthy’s seat?

YourCentralValley.com spoke with both candidates to hear why each of them think they are the right man for the job and what issues they hope to tackle if elected.

Immigration

Both candidates said they believe in a strong and secure border.

According to Fong, border security is the number one issue in the nation. “We need to secure the border in a real way,” said Fong. “We need to increase the Border Patrol, build a wall and physical barriers, and end catch and release.”

Boudreaux says, that while the border does need to be a top priority, he believes there must also be a categorization of offenders who come across international borders.

“What about the migrant worker who’s been here for 20 years living on a diary and has raised his family? Is that who we deport first?”

Israel and college campus protests

Both candidates expressed complete support for Israel in the war against Hamas and expressed a disheartened disappointment for recent college campus protests and President Biden’s threat to withhold aid to Israel.

“It’s horrific,” Fong said, “it’s an example of structural failures within the leadership of our UC and CSU system – every single one of the protesters if they used ant-Semitic rhetoric or violence, they should be punished, expelled, and be prosecuted to the highest extent of the law.”

Boudreaux says crimes against Israel should also be talked about on college campuses. “Why are we not talking about infants who were beheaded and their bodies thrown into the streets?” Boudreaux asked. “Why are we not talking about women that were openly raped in the streets and their heads cut off?”

Importance of voting

Both candidates agreed on one final thing: the importance of voting in the special election. Boudreaux says every vote counts and Fong says whoever wins the special election will affect the lives of every individual in the 28th Congressional District.

The special election to decide who will fulfill the remaining term in California’s 20th congressional district is set for May 21.
